Åbo Akademi University

Åbo Akademi University was founded in 1918 (but builds on the traditions of the university with the same name founded in 1640) and is the only Swedish-language multi-faculty university in Finland. Åbo Akademi has about 7,800 students and 1,200 members of staff and has an acknowledge position at the forefront of research. In 2006, all teaching and research in Information Technology was concentrated into the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, which thereby was renamed as the Faculty of Technology. Åbo Akademi has developed and strengthened its role as a research university, and the Faculty of Technology is the most research-intensive unit within the field of technology in Finland. The research conducted at the university is primarily funded by the Academy of Finland, the Finnish industry, the European Union, and the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovations.

The Faculty of Technology consists of two departments, one being the Department of Information Technologies with Information Systems (IS) as one of the three areas of specialization within the department.

Students are offered Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in IS. The department offers a Master’s degree programme in Electronic and Mobile Commerce taught in English. The two-year programme is comprehensive and up-to-date with the latest knowledge in the scientific field of information Systems. The studies are combined with subject areas in business economics and management science. The programme leads to a Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration degree. When graduating, the students will have both an academic Master’s degree and hands-on experience in building and launching information systems.

City of Turku

Turku is a quaint but modern Baltic Sea city of 200,000 residents. The academic traditions in Turku date back to 1640, when the Royal Academy of Turku was founded. Long history, friendly people and modern technology all come together in this European Culture Capital of 2011.

Today Turku hosts a total of three universities: University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University and Turku School of Economics. The whole campus area lies within 10 minute walking distance from the city centre and can be reached even faster with the intercity bus traffic. In addition to the libraries of all of the tree universities, the city public library, located next to the River Aura, is also available, as are the lovely cafeterias where you read your books to by the riverside during summer times.

The people in Turku are shy but honest and helpful. They enjoy music in the annual festivals Down By The Laituri and Ruisrock. Nightlife is also rich and peaceful throughout the year. All activity is only brightened up with snow in the winter, even though to really enjoy the snow to the fullest you need to take a trip to the northern parts of Finland, which are popular domestic travel inspirations for Finns. The reliable Finnish city to city buss and railroad connections provide for this conveniently.

Finnish people are active users and innovators of the communication technology. Even most of school children have their own cell phones and among students it is rare to find a person without one.

Turku is well-know for biotechnology, medical technology and for active usage of ICT in culture and education. Furthermore, Turku is the world leading centre for advanced ship building hosting new innovative ICT in that segment.
